Romney And Bain Capital

Excellent article about Romney's immense oversight at Bain Capital.

A Promise Not Kept - Profits Over People

In early 2012, reports circulated detailing some of the profit-centered entitlement raids that occurred at Bain Capital under Republican Presidential nominee, Mitt Romney. The Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance became intrigued when asbestos industry defendants appeared on a list of these types of corporate liquidations and commissioned a three-month investigation of the company’s handling of GS Industries through journalist, Gary Cohn. What we uncovered is the true human tragedy of collateral damage stemming from this profit model. We found a community affected by decades of toxic exposure, gasping for breath while picking up the pieces among an uncertain future.

Toxic Companies

Boy, do I know how those young men feel! A survey found the obvious: 60% of young male workers want to punch their colleagues in the face. I've worked for toxic companies long before enjoying my days writing about dildos, massage oils, and bondage toys. I have often had fantasies of punching out my bosses as well as my co-workers. And those fantasies focused in particular on one company I worked for back in the 1980s.

I won't name the place, but I will say that it was the most hostile, psychotic, sexist, and psychologically damaging place I ever worked. I needed the money so I put up with the abuse for two years. It is a federal contractor where I worked as a typist transcribing documentation for federal filings. All I did for eight hours every day was type, type, type, and the faster I did it the better.

Was I thanked for my hard work? Hell no! I was ridiculed, called stupid, put down constantly, and reduced to tears on numerous occasions. This job prepared me psychologically for accepting an abusive marriage. My boss used to call in a local woman who could type faster than the speed of sound and the staff would praise this woman's talents while putting me down even more mercilessly than usual.

I see the guy who was president when I worked there is still president. He used to fall asleep at his desk holding up a magazine in front of him so he didn't look like he slept on the job. I used to walk in with his mail and quietly sit it in front of him on the desk so when he'd wake up from dozing he'd see his mail and know someone caught him napping on the job. I got a kick out of that.

But wait, there's more! One morning one of the managers did not show up for work. His wife had called the office to ask if anyone had seen him. She said he didn't come home the night before and she was worried. So the managers got in their cars and drove around town looking for him, fearing to find him dead in a ditch somewhere. After about an hour of that, someone got the bright idea of opening his office. There he was on the floor, passed out drunk and starting on a hang-over. He'd been out getting trashed all night. This man had on one of his drunken binges sexually harassed me in the past.

I was so demoralized working at this place that I honestly didn't think I'd ever find a job anywhere else and I needed the money to pay my bills. Leaving was the healthiest thing I had ever done. And yes, I wanted to punch out my colleagues and bosses every second of every day.

Schadenfreude alert: I was curious to see if this outfit was still around and it is. It also is engaged in the same horrid behavior I suffered when I worked there. This company was sued by the EEOC for disability discrimination recently. The man who suffered ill treatment by this company was harassed, humiliated, and eventually fired one week before he was due to return to work after being on medical leave. Gee, I can relate. Those people should be sent to Venus to work in a mine for eternity.

I'm much happier doing the work I do now. I look back on that horrible job as fodder for my fiction. It was the most horrible working experience of my life and I'm glad it's behind me.

New At On The Issues - The Kinkiness Of Slut Shaming

My new article about slut shaming and young, single straight women who want to enjoy their sexuality is up at On The Issues, the premiere feminist magazine. I talk about own experience wanting to rid myself of my virginity and enjoy sex when I was in college, therefore making me a slut and not in a good way. I didn't even have sex toys back then but if I had I'd have used them every day and night. Here's an excerpt:

American society is not kind to sexually active, single, straight women, especially when virginity is so popular among political talking heads. The purity movement and "hooking up" culture are at loggerheads, creating a great deal of confusion.

Chances are, if you're a woman who enjoys playing the field, you've been called a slut, whore, tramp, and a host of other slurs. There is no equivalent set of words for guys who play the field, and the words that describe them are positive, something to aspire to: Lothario, player, stud, Casanova. "Slut" is designed to humiliate and negatively judge a sexually active woman simply because she has a vagina.

But what if a young woman wants to explore her sexuality? What if she does not want to wait for marriage or isn't really all that interested in marriage to begin with?

BP Spills Coffee

I'm taking a break from writing about vibrators to show everyone this silly but rather frightening film called "BP Spills Coffee". My son's visiting for the summer while on break from college and he finds shiat like this all the time. It's hilarious but it would be funnier if it weren't so true. Enjoy!

Abstinence-Only Education Lies

Here's a time capsule for you. I originally wrote this post in 2004, when Wade Horn was running the Dept. of Health and Human Services. Now that everyone knows what a colossal failure abstinence-only education is, hindsight is a good thing.

About Abstinence-Only Education

A November, 2004, Washington Times article noted that the Bush administration "included more than $131 million for abstinence programs in its $388 billion spending bill. This represents an increase of $30 million for programs that teach middle- and high-school youths that sexual abstinence until marriage is the best choice. The new funding is far less than the $100 million Mr. Bush requested, but it marks a "record level of funding," said leaders of the National Abstinence Clearinghouse in Sioux Falls, S.D."

According to the Working For Change article, "in late December, the Sun Myung Moon Unification Church-owned Washington Times reported that "the nation's two largest abstinence-grant programs [were moved] to a new -- and friendlier -- agency within the Department of Health and Human Services." The ACF, run by Horn, "recently received oversight of the $50 million Title V and $104 million community-based abstinence-education grant programs. Wade Horn's leadership and commitment to abstinence will be a tremendous benefit to abstinence education," said Bruce Cook, founder of Choosing the Best abstinence program. He "will do a wonderful job of promoting the [abstinence] message with the passion and commitment it deserves," said Libby Gray, director of the Project Reality abstinence group in Glenview, Ill.

Abstinence-only education has already been criticized for spreading misconceptions and outright lies. A Congressional staff analysis led by Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) addressed some of these serious problems:

"Many American youngers participating in federally funded abstinence-only programs have been taught over the past three years that abortion can lead to sterility and suicide, that half the gay male teenagers in the United States have tested positive for the AIDS virus, and that touching a person's genitals "can result in pregnancy, a congressional staff analysis has found.

Those and other assertions are examples of the "false, misleading, or distorted information" in the programs' teaching materials, said the analysis, released yesterday, which reviewed the cirricula of more than a dozen projects aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease."

Here are some of the fallacies children are being taught with abstinence-only education:

* A 43-day-old fetus is a "thinking person."

* HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, can be spread via sweat and tears.

* Condoms fail to prevent HIV transmission as often as 31 percent of the time in heterosexual intercourse.

* One curriculum, called "Me, My World, My Future," teaches that women who have an abortion "are more prone to suicide" and that as many as 10 percent of them become sterile. This contradicts the 2001 edition of a standard obstetrics textbook that says fertility is not affected by elective abortion, the Waxman report said.

[From 2007] Washington State had experienced a serious problem in sex education related to the conservative, religious push for abstinence-only education. A third of Washington schools are not teaching young people about condoms or other forms of contraception. The only contraceptiong being taught is abstinence. An eight-year study found that teens who take abstinence pledges "are almost as likely to be infected with a sexually transmitted disease as those who never made the pledge." We need good sex education in schools and at home, not a lot of misconstrued garbage that appeals to religious conservative

Marriage initiatives have not been shown to work, and they should not be hoisted on the poor by Wade Horn and DHHS. Abstinence-only education does not belong in our children's classrooms, and Wade Horn should not be funding lies and misconceptions that would appeal to a "faith-based" contingency. The time for social experimentation on the backs of the poor and on our children must stop.

Abstinence-Only Education Has Been ELIMINATED!!

I just read via Amplify Your Voice that Obama did away with Federal funding for abstinence-only education. Yippiee!! Abstinence-only education has been a train wreck failure for nearly a decade, and I've written plenty about it here on my blog. Here's an excerpt of the details from an article by Amplify Your Voice:

Not only are all of the abstinence-only funds eliminated, but $173 million dollars will now be going to teen pregnancy prevention programs around the country that don’t have to adhere to the ridiculous standards that were there before.

While we can celebrate this news for now, we aren’t quite out of the woods yet. A door is still open for Congress to sneak these funds back in if we don’t put enough pressure on them.

Of the $110 million that are going to state-based teen pregnancy prevention programs, 75% are going to “evidence-based” programs, while 25% are going “new models” which aren’t explicitly defined. The danger here is that Congress might still try to slip abstinence-only programs into the budget during the appropriations process. David Obey, the Democratic chair of the Appropriations Committee, has tried to increase funding for abstinence-only programs in the past, and we need to make sure that he and his colleagues don’t allow this to happen now.

I just wanted to post the good news. Now if only we could get more good news for this country. It seems we're emerging from the swamp that was the Bush Presidency at long last.

Oh Boy! The Obama Dildo And Condoms!!!!

In honor of President Barack Obama shaking up things in Washington D. C., I just had to tell everyone about the latest evidence of goofy sex toys that Jump The Shark.

Here it is: The Obama Presidential Dildo!!!! In blue or gold!!

Watch it spin. Isn't it hypnotic?

And why not buy some Obama condoms to go with the dildo? They cost $4.32 each. That's quite a hefty price for a condom, isn't it? But it's historic!!!

So now you too can enjoy this historic presidency in style. I've never been overly thrilled with Obama, but I still think McCain/Palin would have been much worse. The only real mention of Obama I've had here was my relief the day Dubya finally left the building, and the graphic link I had in my sidebar to a sex toys company that was giving a 10% discount for sex toys purchases in honor of endorsing Obama. I must admit that the Obama condoms and dildo sure go well with the Hillary Clinton nutcracker and the porn DVD "Who's Nailin Paylin"... This country has officially Jumped The Shark.
