Fred Phelps, Pick On Someone Your Own Size

I saw this at The American Street. Echindne wrote it. This really infuriates me. Fred Phelps is going to harass a 12 year old because the kid won an essay contest. The kid's topic? Gay comedienne Ellen Degeneres.

Hate in Action

Fred Phelps and his lot are planning to picket a school in Massachusetts:

A Kansas-based evangelical group plans to picket Englesby Intermediate School June 6 after a student won an essay contest writing about openly gay comedienne Ellen DeGeneres.

A flier from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka singles out a Women in History essay written by a 12-year-old student who chose DeGeneres as her subject. The invective-laden leaflet includes a photo of the Englesby School and a grotesque devil. The diatribe attacks the staff, labeling it a "homo-fascist regime," among other things.

Acting Police Chief Kevin Richardson said he received a communication from Fred Phelps, pastor of the Kansas church, asking for information about securing the proper permits. Richardson recoiled when shown the flier, saying, "No, we didn’t get this."

Fred Phelps is the man who protested at the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the young man who was murdered in a disgusting anti-gay hate crime. Phelps explains his hate-filled leaflet like this:

Asked about the incendiary nature of the epithet-laced flier, Phelps said, "I’m just like Harry Truman. He didn’t start out giving them hell and I don’t give them hell, but I preach it like American preachers preached in days gone by."

Why are we letting this happen to a twelve year old child???

Why is it that backwards cretins like this compare themselves to famous people and movements that sought equal and civil rights? I've seen fathers' rights activists compare themselves to Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. They compare their "plight" to slavery. There is no comparison between valid civil rights movements and losing your sense of entitlement.

Fred Phelps is a snot-nosed playground bully who harasses kids. He's no Harry Truman.

First, I send you my deepest sympathy on the passing away of Mulder. She continues to live, though, you just can't see her right now because the conditions are not sufficient for her to manifest as a cat. However, you and she will meet again. Neverless, because the temporary perception of being separated can be quite painful, I extend to you my compassion and best wishes for consolation at this difficult time.

Second, to my great shock, almost agreed with this post in its entirety. Fred Phelps is a very disturbed individual. He is most certainly not preaching the message of Jesus of Nazareth, at least not the Jesus I've heard and read about. (I'm not christian so I don't know the details, but I'm confident that Mr. Phelps is acting in a manner that's consistent with any christian teachings I've ever encountered.)

As a gesture of kindness, I'm going to simply ignore the following unnecessary and unduly inflammatory comment.

I've seen fathers' rights activists compare themselves to Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. They compare their "plight" to slavery. There is no comparison between valid civil rights movements and losing your sense of entitlement.

Peace, out.

As for the comparison of the plight of father's rights activist to slavery and the denial of the right to vote for women, I disagree with you. There is a comparison. Slavery was wrong. Denying women the right to vote was wrong and denying father's the right to be equally active in the raising of their children is wrong. We shall over come!

I'm wondering what happended to you Trish to make you such a bitter person. You seem to have a real hatred for men. Why is that?

Posted by: Mike at May 16, 2005 2:09:51 AM

Thanks for the kind words about Mulder, Tim. It's amazing that we agree on something, namely Fred Phelps. I agree that he's not preaching the words of Jesus.

He's NOT preaching the words of Jesus, and it's sad that he thinks he is. Jesus didn't victimize children. This guy is just another sick bully, using Christianity as an excuse to peddle his hatred.

Phelps is a sicko and it's a sign of how sick the Right is that they don't speak up and distance themselves from his hate-mongering. His problems go far beyond what most "media coverage" of his behavior is willing to contemplate. (Really, if he were preaching murder against any group but gays, he'd be in jail.)

(My sympathies to you on Mulder.)

Here is a wealth of information on Fred Phelps that should be talking points in all media contact:

About The Westboro Baptist Church
At the funeral of gay murder victim Matthew Shepard, they held up signs reading "No Fags in Heaven" and "God Hates Fags." According to their Web site, they have staged "20,000" protests across the nation and around the world in the last decade. They believe that "God's hatred is one of His holy attributes." They are the congregants of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas.

Fred Phelps gullibly cited an article in The Onion, a satire magazine, as evidence of homosexual recruitment.

A recent cover story, '98 HOMOSEXUAL-RECRUITMENT DRIVE NEARING GOAL was picked up by Fred Phelps, architect of the notorious God Hates Fags Web site, who listed the article as proof of a gay conspiracy. Onion Webmaster Jack Szwergold quickly doctored the link so that Phelps groupies who clicked on it would be transported to The Onion's homepage, where they would understand (he hoped) that it was a spoof of the very kind of homophobic paranoia Phelps peddles.

Anti-gay Parents Say Satire = Evidence

Phelps thanks God for the South Asian Tsunami
The tsunami was an adumbration of the wrath of God, a harbinger of things to come: that Great Day of Judgment. Amos 3:6 "Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?" That word translated "evil" there is means distress, misery, injury, calamity. The answer, of course, to the rhetorical question posed in this verse is a resounding "NO!" See also Romans 1:18 "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;" And you wonder if this is the wrath of God?

Fred Phelps says The Fire Department of New York is "a fag department"

Mr. Rogers is in hell, apparently. So says America's most vitriolic and controversial Baptist preacher, Reverend Fred Phelps. On May 3, Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church congregation will picket a memorial service for Rogers, attempting to educate its attendees on the evils of the revered PBS icon.

FRED: Well, it hasn't been long ago. We've been up there three times since Sept. 11 picketing with big signs that say "Thank God For Sept. 11" and that the FDNY is a fag fire department.
BT: Why's that?
FRED: Well because they're laced with fags and their fag agenda and their chaplain was a fag priest named Mychal Judge
FRED: And any outfit that's that dumb or evil -- I mean an out-of-the closet fag priest?! And they bragged about it! And they need to be picketed. And they're not heroes and we got signs that say all that.
When St. Patrick's Cathedral was honoring them on a Sunday not long after Sept. 11 and they had all those fire trucks lined up there and they're praising them to the high heavens then we were over there with signs saying that they're not heroes and they're all bound for hell. Now, that's the way you preach

From Wikipedia
Fred Phelps (born November 13, 1929) is the controversial leader of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, United States, which is notorious for its web sites godhatesfags.com and godhatesamerica.com. Gay rights activists, as well both mainstream and fundamentalist Christians, have denounced him as a producer of anti-gay propaganda and violence-inspiring hate speech. The church is located in the basement of his home, which is the center of a block-wide fenced compound, the other houses in which are occupied by nine of his thirteen children.

Here is an important excerpt from an article in the little girl's local paper, The Lowell Sun:

School officials: No gay focus in student's essay

DRACUT -- School administrators said a 12-year-old sixth-grader's essay about openly gay comedienne Ellen DeGeneres won her grade level at Englesby Intermediate School because it was well-written.

Bernadette and Dino Theodore, whose son's entry about Rosa Parks did not win, were upset by the DeGeneres essay, saying her sexuality has no bearing on her place in history.

They said they did not contact the Kansas-based group led by Rev. Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka. They also complained that they were not notified that one student had written about a gay woman.

The couple said that several families have lodged complaints, but Trouville said they only received one -- from the Theodores.

Englesby Principal Robert Young said the winning essay passed through numerous hands during the process and no objections were raised.

Hi Trish....I wrote a similar post on my own blog about the insanity of these people! I was heartsick when I heard they would be protesting this little girl.

Posted by: Nikki at May 18, 2005 2:41:35 PM

Ian -- than you for that link. I love how they ended the news report:

Commenting on the epithet-laden flier, Espindle [Superintendent of Schools] said, “It's ironic that the grace and discourse exhibited by a sixth-grader far outweighed the language contained in that literature.”
