Proof That The Blogosphere Can Make An Impact

I'd like to thank the following blogs for writing about and linking to my posts about the Genia Shockome case:

Mental Health Update

Thoughts Of An Average Woman

Willow Tree

The Disenchanted Forest (For some reason I can't get the link to work, but this blog mentioned the Shockome case.)

Bitch, Ph.D.

Alas, A Blog

Pinko Feminist Hellcat

I hope I didn't forget anyone. I think I got everyone. If I did, e-mail me, and I'll include a link to your post.

Thanks to bloggers, the petition to free Genia Shockome from jail received over 300 signatures in less than 48 hours. Shockome remains in jail, but word is out that people are protesting the decision. An article has also been written. I'm on my laptop, and not on my iMac, so I don't have access to that article right now. I'll update this post later to include that information. As I receive more updates, I'll post about them.

Actually, it's over 475 now. There are signatures from Canada and Ireland too. And judging by the surnames, this petition is getting expossure in the Russian emigre community as well.

To Russians especially, it is certainly no crime to speak out "vociferously" or even "passionately" on behalf on one's children.

Just FYI, I had posted a link to your piece on the case this morning.

Trish:

That's GREAT news, thanks for the update. Now all we need to do is help ensure that there is a stay/injunction so her ex-husband can't take the kids out of state until the custody case is heard at the next level court and there is an evidentiary hearing on the matter.

PS/ I tried to check the problem with the link and it looks like there's an extra period after the com.

oh crap, I read that too fast and thought she was released already; we need to get her released AND get the other stuff done too :)

Trish, I sure hope there is a favorable outcome, the least of which that she is released and her children are returned to her custody. Thanks for the update, and I can't wait to see (read) the article.

Ol Cranky, I was informed that her appeal was denied. It looks like she's going to remain in jail.

Not only has Genia not been released, but the State of NY is bending over backwards trying to cover its collective _ss. Now, for reasons that are totally incomprehensible, Eliot Spitzer, the NY ATTORNEY GENERAL, is getting involved in the effort to keep Genia in jail. What is Spitzer doing in a non-criminal family court matter? The big boys are really flexing their muscles now, to the point where the court system is sending defensive emails and leaked transcripts to people who contacted Judge Amodeo. I tell ya, something fishy is going on in the state of New York. Meanwhile, I hear that the NY Daily News will be covering the story this weekend. For those of you outside the NYC area, the News has been doing a lot of exposure stuff lately on corrupt judges -- all the bribes, special backroom deals, payoffs, rampant conflicts of interest, you name it.

Actually, not the News. It's the Post.

I received one of those defensive e-mails and the court transcript. So did The Heretik. He wrote to me to tell me so. Curiouser and curiouser...

I was wondering if anybody else got this package too. Pretty hyper-defensive response from the court head honchos to a simply worded email. And releasing a matrimonial transcript, something usually classified as private, to the public at large without any special request is particularly strange, virtually unprecedented. They must be really feeling the heat to go into overdrive like this. And doesn't Spitzer have better things to do, like go after organized crime figures or white collar ripoff artists on Wall Street? Nah, he's gonna beat up on a pregnant woman who's already in jail and doesn't speak English as her first language and didn't commit any real crime at all. Basically, she's there for a grade-school violation blown up large: speaking out of turn. Oh yea, big threat to public safety this one.

I also wondered why I was sent what should be a private transcript. I'm sure a lot of people contacted that judge, and I'm equally sure they were e-mailed that transcript and the rote note explaining away the judge's decision and actions. I believe he shut off his fax machine when he began to get letters, then his e-mail was published. I sent an innocuous letter by e-mail, including a suggested reading:

Joanna L. Klass and Joel V. Klass, "Threatened Mother Syndrome (TMS): A Diverging Concept of Parental Alienation Syndrome." American Journal of Family Law, 18. 4 (Winter, 2005), pp. 189-192.

I don't like that the authors labeled this a syndrome, since it isn't one, but it explains why abused mothers act out in court - they are afraid of losing their children to abusers, and they are trying to protect their children.
