Bird Watch

The moment I filled the birdfeeders the birds came back. I saw the usual crows, sea gulls, house sparrows, and starlings. The starlings went to town on my suet. Those are Trash Birds. They eat everthing in site.

I also saw a catbird, a red-breasted nuthatch, chickadees, a cardinal, some wrens, and some goldfinches. I put out the suet for the woodpecker, but it hasn't been by lately.

It rained yesterday, so the birds will be back soon. I like sitting in my garden and watching them go to the feeders. It's very relaxing.

I need to fill the hummingbird feeder. We have hummingbirds. Once the Bee Balm blooms they'll show up. They like those trumpet-shaped red flowers.

Right now, we have ruby-throated hummingbirds, Carolina chickadees, cardinals, wrens, nuthatches, orchard orioles, Eastern bluebirds, and tufted titmice. At some time or another, there are brown thrashers, three types of woodpeckers, goldfinches, blackbirds, crows, grackles, and some rare sightings on occasion: painted bunting, broad-winged hawk, dark-eyed junco.

If we had more sun, we could plant a hummingbird garden and get the travelers instead of just the natives. I have been photographically documenting our garden, but I haven't gotten to the birds yet.

Diane, I've seen tufted titmice outside before, but they haven't shown up yet. I usually see them with the chickadees. They tend to hang out together. I saw a house finch yesterday. I've seen purple finches before, but not this time. I expect them to show up soon. There is a yellow-throated sparrow that hangs around the house, but I haven't seen it yet. I've heard its call, though. There are also a few mockingbirds and blue jays around the house, too. I've heard their calls, but I haven't seen them yet.

The juncos show up in the winter. At the ocean I've seen several varieties of gulls, cormorants, buffleheads, goldeneyes, terns, and herons. When I walk along the cliffs I've seen robins, catbirds, mockingbirds, wrens, cardinals, blue jays, several types of nuthatches, and blackbirds. There are red-winged blackbirds around the salt marshes.
