Bush's "Compassionate Conservatism" Is Lacking

I know that Bush pays lip-service to the religious right (he'd rather placate his corporate buddies), but hearing it from one of his own is highly telling. David Kuo was deputy director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives for much of Bush's first term. He quit in disgust. He isn't the first director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives to quit - John DiIulio was the first to quit.

Here is an excerpt from the Washington Post article linked above. [via Kos]:

A former White House official said yesterday that President Bush has failed to deliver on his promise to help religious groups serve the poor, the homeless and drug addicts because the administration lacks a genuine commitment to its "compassionate conservative" agenda.

David Kuo, who was deputy director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives for much of Bush's first term, said in published remarks that the White House reaped political benefits from the president's promise to help religious organizations win taxpayer funding to care for "the least, the last and the lost" in the United States. But he wrote: "There was minimal senior White House commitment to the faith-based agenda."

Analyzing Bush's failure to secure $8 billion in promised funding for the faith-based initiative during his first term, Kuo said there was "snoring indifference" among Republicans and "knee-jerk opposition" among Democrats in Congress.

"Capitol Hill gridlock could have been smashed by minimal West Wing effort," Kuo wrote on Beliefnet.com, a Web site on religion. "No administration since [Lyndon B. Johnson's] has had a more successful legislative record than this one. From tax cuts to Medicare, the White House gets what the White House really wants. It never really wanted the 'poor people stuff.' "

Read Kuo's column here. He's very unhappy.

Don't expect the White House to do much for the religious right such as focus on gay marriage or abortion until next year, when Republicans have to pander to them for more votes.

Isnt that a democratic agenda? Helping the poor and homeless? I personally never recall voting for gw because he promised to help the poor and homeless.

I get really sick of the phrase "religious right" being thrown around. As if this is some sort of organized group that protests abortion and gay rights. I would hope you realize that the religious right is made up of more people who dont protest than do. Honest hard working moral americans who care about their neighbors and family who dont protest or even think about caring about what homosexuals do. Sure they care but its not like they make a mockery of themselves about it. YOU just assume all this.

You really need a reality check.

And as far as pandering for votes...You just wait to see how Billary changes over the next three years. By the end of 2007 you will think she's a good old boy. Shes already started.

"Hillary Clinton's Abortion Views Change?
Senator Hillary Clinton stated in an appearance in Albany that abortion was a "sad, even tragic choice." She said that she would support keeping abortion legal, but she also respected those people that wish to ban the procedure. She hopes that the two sides will find common ground to reduce abortions through preventing unwanted pregnancies. Critics are saying that Clinton is changing her stance on abortion and many flat out rejected her ideas on finding a common ground between pro-choice and anti-choice groups. "

You have a lot of pet trolls Trish! And "compassionate conservative"? Hmmm? What's wrong with little phrase? Oh that's right, everything! A classic oxymoron.
