Music From "Without A Trace"
Welcome, "Without A Trace" fans! Please visit my entire "Without A Trace" category for all posts about the show and both CSIs. This post is the most popular one, but I'm sure you'll want to see all of the posts.
Update Friday, September 24, 2004: Welcome back, "Without A Trace" fans! The song played on last night's season premiere was "Do No Wrong" by Thirteen Senses. This was the episode about the blind woman and her coach who had been kidnapped by two men who worked in a restaurant frequented by the blind woman.
Update Thurs. May 6, 2004: I started including info and music from CSI a few months ago. This week, I updated this category to include music and anything anyone else like from "Cold Case." The song that played at the end of this past Sunday's episode, about the men who murdered a pedophilic military instructor who had abused them when they were boys was "It's Not Going To Stop," by Aimee Mann.
Update: March 7, 2004: Several fans have asked for the name of the vocalist who sang "One of these Mornings" on Moby 18.
She is Dianne McCauley. Here's a note from CSUB Runner Entertainment (which I think misspelled McCauley's last name): "Using the same formula as "In This World," "One of These Mornings" has the same effect, but this time, Moby uses a new musical technique, in which he takes Dianne McCaulley's voice and turns it into a male’s voice, but later fades it back into her own voice." That page identifies several of the vocalists and the songs they sang. All of the guest vocalists for the album were Jennifer Price, Azure Ray, Dianne McCauley, Angie Stone, MC Lyte, Freedom Bremner, Sinead O'Connor, Shauna & Lorraine Phillips, and The Shining Light Gospel Choir.
Update - March 4, 2004: I wrote an in-depth update here. The song was "One of these Mornings," by Moby from Moby 18. I've also learned something interesting about closed-captioning revealing lyrics to songs that are not heard on the episode's audio. Go to the link to learn more.
Update - Nov. 18: I just learned the identities of the songs played on last week's "Without A Trace." This is for the episode "The Tree Falls." The song at the beginning of the show was "The Headphonist" by Kinky from the album "Atlas." The other song was "Bluebird of Happiness" by Mojave 3 from the album "Spoon and Rafter." Thanks to Emmybugs at TV Tome for identifying these songs.
Update - Nov. 14: I have not been able to find out who wrote last night's song nor its name. If anyone else knows, please tell me.
Update - Nov. 7: Hello, "Without A Trace" fans! Please go to this entry on my blog to learn the identity of this week's song. I'm going to update weekly on the main page of my blog, so once you read this post (I know most of you find it via search engine), go to the main page.
Update - Halloween: The song that played during the Oct. 30 "Without A Trace" was the sixth track from Moby 18, "One Of These Mornings." I'm on a roll recognizing these songs. I recognized Lamb's "Gabriel" the moment I heard it play during an October 13 episode of CSI: Miami.
Update: I've noticed that this particular post about "Without A Trace" has been getting lots of hits, especially during and immediately after the show airs each week. For the WIT fans looking for more information about the show, check this blog entry of mine. I've included additional links to fan clubs, web sites, and even a WIT greeting card site. I've since obtained two of Coldplay's albums. That group puts out good music. Trouble is only one good song they play.
I'm very tired after tending to the kittens all day. The last thing I feel like doing is hard-core political blogging. I do more than my share of that anyway. Today I'll keep it light.
We watched the premieres of both CSIs and Without A Trace this week. One thing I've always liked about Without A Trace is the music. Thursday night was no exception. Last night I ran a few Google searches and found out not only the name of that song and who sang it it but the names of all the songs that had appeared on the show last season. I thought Thursday night's song was sung by Neil Young. Sure sounded like him. (My age is showing.) Turns out that it's called Mad World and it's done by Gary Jules. I've heard the song before. It played in Donnie Darko.
I especially liked the song on last season's episode about the flight attendant who had gone missing. Heather Donohoe from The Blair Witch Project was in it. That song was Trouble, by Coldplay. The season finale included another song that caught my attention: Hallelujah, by Jeff Buckley.
I definitely must add those songs to my music collection.

What is the song from the episode of Without a Trace that aired on Thursday October 30th, 2003. The episode where the woman that was a mother that was kidnapped. Th song at the end, where the bad guy jumps and dies after the main charcter lets go, that song looking for the girl in the trunk.
Posted by: Tony Becker at Oct 31, 2003 4:18:34 AM
Tony, it was the sixth track from Moby's CD, Moby 18, "One Of These Mornings." I e-mailed my reply to you too because I don't know how often you'd visit my blog.

it was so weird, i noticed right away at the beginning of the episode last night (10/30/03) that the music during the opening was the same music that played at the end of the episode last season featuring spalding--a haunting song, but i never knew the name or artist. thanks for letting me know the details! i'm so impressed by the music supervision of this show--using the moby song to establish emotional continuity between this episode and the one featuring the same character last year was really effective (for me anyway). i immediately got creeped out remembering jack's speech to spalding in the car in the rain on the way to find the little boy...

One of These Mornings" is my favorite song now. I Iove it! After i heard it on without a trace last night, i was obsessed with trying to find out who it was sang by...the song had a strange effect on me, maybe because i was half sleep, and i heard it...but what ever it was, i'm glad i heard it....It's only like four lines in the song, but it's so beautiful to me....
and this was the only place that i found who told me what i wanted to know. I spent like an hour trying to find out what the song was called. So thanx...:)

Any idea the name of the song that was playing in the background on the disc the kidnapper made for Jack on Oct 30's episode? I beleive it's a classical song. I've heard it before, but no idea who wrote it...Thanks in advance
Erin
Posted by: Erin at Oct 31, 2003 5:22:02 PM
Erin, the classical song was the Arab Dance, from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker."
I'm glad I could help all of you find Moby. I hope I'm lucky enough to recognize next week's song so quickly. My favorite song so far is a tie between "Trouble," by Coldplay and "Mad World," by Gary Jules. Coldplay's pretty good. I'm a fan of the group now because of the show.

What was the ending song on tonights episode called "sons and daughters" ?
Posted by: Ben at Nov 6, 2003 11:18:03 PM
i am also looking for the song at the end of "Sons and Daughters". I believ it ia s a cranberries song, but have had no luck finding it. I am probably way off though. please help. :)
Posted by: jason at Nov 7, 2003 2:39:55 AM
The song is "Fade Into You," by Mazzy Star. I've never heard of her.
Jason, I knew as soon as I heard it that it wasn't The Cranberries. Star does sound a little like Dolores O'Riordan, although she has neither the lilt nor the accent. I like the Cranberries. I have two of their CD's.
Whatever happened to them?
Posted by: Trish Wilson at Nov 7, 2003 6:58:24 AM
They just sort of disappeared a few years back. i had heard at one point they had broken, up, but I am not positive. thanks for the help though. that was going to really bug me if I hadnt learned the name. :)

Hey Guys thanks for the song....I have been trying to figure out the one by Mazzy Star since last week.....once again thanks....much appreciated.

Saw the "The Bus" again last night. Are they playing a slow version of "Gone Away" by the Offspring?
Posted by: Jim Melcher at Nov 18, 2003 10:04:10 PM
does anyone know the song that was played during the beginning and end of "The Bus"? I have been looking since it first aired.
Posted by: brendan at Nov 19, 2003 8:22:36 PM
i would like the play list for "The Bus" too...... anyone?
Posted by: Rick at Nov 19, 2003 11:12:10 PM
I know that "Mad World" was played in "The Bus." Not sure about "Gone Away" by the Offspring. "Mad World" was first done by Tears for Fears. The version that played on "The Bus" is the same version that is on the soundtrack to the movie "Donnie Darko." I think it was done by Gary Jules. There are several versions of that song out there.

Thanks Trish,,,, I finally figued out why I liked that tune... I was a pretty big fan of Tears and didnt recognize it until you Identified it......
Thanks again its a pretty awesome show as well

Hi everybody! I'm from Brazil, so I don't speak english very well, but I need you to help me, please! Here, 'Without a Trace' is showed by Warner TV, so I think the episodes are some months late. By the way, last week was that one which a girl was mad with her boyfriend for something that the sherif's daughter told her he (the boyfriend) did, so she had sex with a lot of guys, then told her family she has been raped and then tried to kill herself. In the end they discovered the sheriff killed the boy (suicidal's boyfriend), and showed some cute scenes with the girl and the boy, when she said "I love you" and all these things. I need to know what's that song! It's a girl singing, sounds like Jewel, but I'm not sure. Could you please help me and if you know, send me an email with the singer's and song's name? PLEASE?! Thank you very much.
Oh, almoust forgot! I loved your website, it really helps the fans. Good idea! Buh bye!

That's "Mad World," sung by Gary Jules. It was originally sung by Tears For Fears. You can get both versions on the soundtrack for the movie "Donnie Darko."

It is Mad World by Gary Jules. If it sounds familiar, then it's probably because you heard it in Donnie Darko.

wrenching song, something about "first you're here, then you're gone..." i have to find it!

The lyrics "one day you're here and then you're gone"
are from a song by Ashanti called "Then Ya Gone", at
least I think so. I have no idea who was singing this
version though, but it was good.

Wow, that episode was great. I taped it, and the lyrics I picked up were:
Everything seemed to be okay…
Did it hurt you?
These are the scars you never show,
She is a fire sign you know.
One day you’re here,
And then you go.
Not positive on them all, but now that I've downloaded it (thanks to whoever posted it!) I think those are right. Ah, this song is great.

Hello all!
I have been following the music of without a traceon several websites but there is one song that haunts me and I can't find it. It is from the first season when Chet comes to jack with another hoax about his missing son and when jack tells him it's fake they end the show in a hug. The song has the word "surrender" in iit over and over. One of the sites had this listed as "Surrender by Nuno bettencourt" but that is a cheap Trick cover and not the song played on WAT. Help please :)

I am bugged that I can't bring up the exact show that had a Luther Ingram's remake of:
"If loving you is wrong, I don't want to be right" on it. I thought for sure it was Without
A Trace, but could be wrong. If it was WOAT, who's remake is it?

I was thrilled to find this blog today. I keep hearing great music on TV these days but no one except CBS for Joan of Arcadia. I think we should all write to the networks and ask that they list the music credits! BTW, I am not a kid. I am a middle aged woman who loves some of the new groups and have even bought a couple of CDs from hearing the artists on these shows--Without a Trace, The Guardian, Joan of Arcsdia, West Wing.

Hi, everyone. You might want to go to my main Without A Trace/CSI category on my blog. This page is only one post I made, but it gets a lot of traffic. Some of the answers you're looking for are in throughout the main category. Here's the link:
Trish Wilson's Blog - Without A Trace/CSI Category
Karin, I know which episode you're talking about but I don't know the name of it. If you know the name, go to Britany Frederick: The Invisible. She lists all the songs played per episode. Funny thing is that I think I know who sang the original "If loving you is wrong." I think it was Barbara Mandrell, and it was a country song. LOL
Christine, I don't watch any of the other shows you listed, so I can't help you there. However, I try to identify music playing each week on "Without A Trace" if anything good plays. "The Invisible" is another good link. A "CSI: Miami" fan started up a music list as well. That's a good place to look.
For the other shows, I suggest running a Google search for the name of the show and "music." Like this: "The Guardian" AND music.
I can't guarantee you'll find anything, but at least you have a few sources for music from "CSI: Miami" and "Without A Trace."
Posted by: Trish Wilson at Feb 29, 2004 12:01:33 PM
Trish: I believe you are correct!! I couldn't find it on the Britany Frederick: The Invisible site, but on listening to blurbs of Mandrell's version, I'm almost positive you're right. THANKS! Karin

Trish: You liked Hallelujah by Jeff Wilson? Try the version by Rufus Wainwright (available on Shrek-Soundtrack)... Pretty good, too.
Posted by: Fred Pollex at Mar 3, 2004 4:33:35 PM
Buckley, of course. Buckley, not Wilson... :-)
Posted by: Fred Pollex at Mar 3, 2004 4:36:15 PM
Am I the only person to notice a startling similarity between "mad world" and "gone away" by the offspring? I thought I'd find heaps of info on the net, but I can't find anything really tying them. Wondering if maybe there was a deliberate reason for the similarity. They were both used in the same movie apparently so maybe it was a recurring hook in the score?
Posted by: Neil at Mar 4, 2004 3:00:23 AM
Fred, I found several versions of "Hallelujah." I think the one I like was the one by Buckley. There were a couple I didn't care much for at all. Will search for the one by Rufus Wainwright. It shouldn't be too hard to find the "Shrek" soundtrack.
Neil, do you mean "Donnie Darko?" A lot of that music sounded similar. I'm not sure which song is "Gone Away" but I'll check for it.

Hi!
I`m searching for the song of the last episode, wich was played at the end, something with "Hallelujah". Anyone out there who can help me further with this?
Posted by: Sascha Grosser at Mar 6, 2004 1:11:00 PM
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley:
Now Ive heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Chorus
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to the kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Chorus
And baby Ive been here before
I seen this room and Ive walked this floor
Ya know, I used to live alone before I knew you
Ive seen your flag on the marble arch
That love is not a victory march
Its a cold and its a broken hallelujah
Chorus
But there was a time when you let me know
Whats really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya?
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
Chorus
Maybe theres a god above
But all Ive ever learned from love?
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And its not a cry that you hear at night
Its not somebody that you seem to like
Its a cold and its a broken hallelujah
Chorus

Hi. We've only just started watching "Without A Trace" in Britain so I'm way back on the first series but already hooked! There's a song that's played at the end of "Between the Cracks" when Eve Cleary (Becky) is being identified by her mother and carries on playing when Jack is hugging the father who's been searching for his son for years. All I can remember of the lyrics is the words "surrender now".
Can anyone help??
Posted by: Cheryl at Mar 9, 2004 11:13:42 AM
"Hallelujah" has been covered by several artists, but it was written by Leonard Cohen, who is an absolutely *amazing* song writer. When songs pop out at me on soundtracks, I'm never surprised to find out it's a Leonard Cohen song.

Posted by: Ahmed at Mar 18, 2004 11:19:06 PM
Hey thanks for posting the information about what songs and such.
. I was looking for that Moby song on 'Copy Cat' and that other episode where Graham Spaulding first appears.
Well, keep up the good work.

Cheryl:
>There's a song that's played at the end of "Between the Cracks" when
>Eve Cleary (Becky) is being identified by her mother and carries on
>playing when Jack is hugging the father who's been searching for his
>son for years. All I can remember of the lyrics is the words
>"surrender now".
I think that was "Surrender" by Nuno Bettencourt.
Flea, I was surprised how many artists have covered "Hallelujah." That's a popular song.
FYI everyone, about "One Of These Mornings," from Moby's album Moby 18, which played on the episodes "Suspect" and "Copycat" with character Graham Spaulding ... It's by Moby, but Dianne McCauley actually sings it. Here's a note from CSUB Runner Entertainment: "Using the same formula as "In This World," "One of These Mornings" has the same effect, but this time, Moby uses a new musical technique, in which he takes Dianne McCaulley's voice and turns it into a male’s voice, but later fades it back into her own voice."

hi,
i was wondering if you knew the name of the song played at the end at in a part of the episode on March 25th, 2004. It has some words in it like this "i find it kinda funny, i find it kinda sad"....well, you get the idea...thanks a lot!

Lindsay:

That's definitely "Mad World," by Gary Jules. It played on the episode about the bus.
Funny how the same songs get the most notice. "Mad World" is one of them. You can find the same version on the soundtrack to "Donnie Darko." The original was done by Tears For Fears.

I dont know if anyone watches cold case as well, but a couple of months ago they played the same exact song on without a trace than on sunday on cold case...sound familiar to anyone?
Posted by: Stacey at Mar 31, 2004 3:28:06 PM
I started watching Cold Case Files a few months ago. I missed a lot of episodes because I kept forgetting it was on Sunday night, plus when I'd remember, I thought it was on at 9 (it's on at 8). Sometimes I thought I was just not meant to watch it.
The songs tend to be retro, since that fits the show. There are three possibilities for the song you're thinking of. Was it "Something In The Air," by David Bowie? The Neville Brothers, Bob Dylan, and R.E.M. are three other possibilities.

Best Wishes,
Alex.

A few weeks ago towards the end of the show (about the single mother who lost her daughter, the one with the butterfly windchime) they played a beautiful version of the song "Heaven." Does anyone know who was singing?
Posted by: elisabeth at May 7, 2004 2:53:49 PM
A while ago I saw an episode called "protege" about a young Russian violinist who dissapears
I remember I loved the song they used to end the episode, but that's just about it. I think
it was classical. Can anyone help?

This site is awesome. I finally found that song I've been
trying to find since forever. Thanks. By the Way, its
"Mad World" by Gary Jules. It's the song that was played at
the end of the episode of "Without A Trace" called "The Bus"
Where these people hijack a school bus and all the people are
inside, only to find out the mother of the boy who was tied
in the bus did it.

Does anyone know the song played on the May 20th Without A Trace Episode entitled "Bait" (Second season, season finale).
Posted by: Gaz at May 22, 2004 9:44:32 PM
Gaz, the song during the season finale was "The World Outside,"
by Paloalto. If you want to see the lyrics, visit this page on my blog.
I liked that song. I'm going to try to find some of Paloalto's CDs.

Posted by: RANDOM DUDE at Jul 8, 2004 10:27:09 PM
Random Dude, I haven't heard of a version of Mad World by REM. Maybe you're thinking of Tears For Fears, who did the original. The version by Gary Jules is on the soundtrack for "Donnie Darko." The original is also on the soundtrack.

Could someone tell me who sings the song that
has the lyrics "To The Outside Light, It's Paradise"
from Without a Trace show that aired on Sept 23, 04.
Thanks
Posted by: Rod at Sep 24, 2004 2:21:17 AM
Hi, everyone. I hope you enjoyed the WAT premiere as much as I had.
The song that played on last night's season premiere (Sept. 23) was "Do No Wrong" by Thirteen Senses. It was on at the end of the episode.
Posted by: Trish Wilson at Sep 24, 2004 2:52:26 PM
Lots of comments here about "Hallelujah" from the episode "Fallout: Part two" but can someone tell me which artist it was because I loved the arrangement but it definitely wasn't the Jeff Buckley treatment. It had a lot more piano than Jeff's version does and I really liked that and am trying to get hold of a copy.
Thanks,
Ewan

I would really like to know what the name of the WAT theme is. Thanks.

HI ALL, your site is awesome i have found heaps of good stuff ay! But
does anybody know the song that played first in the season two finale?
I know the one at the end was Paloalto - World Outside...but what was the
one at the start??????????
Posted by: Bogan at Nov 25, 2004 9:02:03 PM
Tonight's episode of Without a Trace (Saturday, November 27) featured a song toward the end (I don't remember what was happening at the time; the music was nearly heavy metal rock but the vocal was lyrical high women's voices, very ethereal and haunting... does anyone know how to find out what the piece was?? I've gone to the W/out a Trace website, but they don't run song credits. If anyone knows I'd really appreciate it if you could e-mail me at JimKandJulieB because this isn't a website I look at....just found it through Google.

What was the song on tonight's Without A Trace (December 2, 2004)? It was at the very end of the show when they saved the young boy. Thanks!
Posted by: Danielle at Dec 2, 2004 11:05:59 PM
on the rerun episode on December 3, 2004. where the young boy is tormented and teased by the other kids of his class. He is given a swirly in the toilet and is also tired to a pole in a barn and teased for an hour. They found him trying to hang himself in the back yard of the girl her liked. at the end of the episode there was a song, im not sure how it went but a few of the lines went like this " one day you're near and then you go away" it is repeated a few times right before he episode ends. but i like the sounds of it and would love to know the name of the song. if you know, let me know
